The US State Department called on Jordan to amend the anti-human-trafficking law to ensure that penalties for human trafficking offenses are consistent with those provided for other serious crimes and that the victims are not penalized inappropriately for unlawful acts committed as a direct result of their exposure to trafficking; for instance, the violations of immigration or prostitution, or the “escape from a bad employer “.
In a report published last week, the Ministry asked for increasing the training of law enforcement officials, such as prison officials and labor inspectors. Moreover, it asked for the full implementation of the national referral mechanism for victims, adopting a final procedure and its distribution to the concerned officials with the recruitment process, as well as continuing the prosecution, conviction and punishment of sex trafficking and forced labor, and inspecting individuals and their punishment, to reserve the workers' passports, according to the law.
The report stressed the need for continuing the cooperation with the non-governmental organizations to identify and refer victims to protection services, allocating funding the government's trafficking shelter, and training the shelter’s workers to identify and provide special care to victims.
