Amnesty International confirmed in a recent statement that violence against Libyan women is continuing four years after of the assassination of the well-known Libyan human rights lawyer and human rights activist, “Salwa Boukaakis”.
The assassination of “Salwa Boukaakis” was carried out by unknown assailants at her home in the eastern city of Benghazi on 25 June 2014. Her assassination resulted in a rapid deterioration in the security situation of women human rights defenders, which continues until today.
The Amnesty International called on the Libyan authorities to provide more protection for the female human rights defenders in the country and to investigate their frequent violent attacks. “Hiba Muraif”, the director of the regional office for the Middle East and North Africa Program in the organization, said that the assassination of “Salwa Boukaakis” was a negative turning point for women in Libya who seek to participate in public life.
“Hiba Muraif” said that women are the most affected by the collapse of the security situation in Libya since 2014, where the lack of accountability for assassinations revealed the impunity for violence against women who dared to express their views, which led some women to withdraw from participating in the Libyan civil society and forcing others to flee the country.
