Jordan: Protests against the Tax Law: Trade unions are at the forefront of the scene while the government is hiding its head in the sand

The observers of the economic and social affairs in Jordan considered that the government became powerless, following the national strike called by the Unions’ Council, in which tens of thousands of workers from several sectors participated, on Wednesday, in rejection of the amended Income Tax Law, which made the unions top the political scene in the Kingdom, in light of the remarkable absence of the parties.

The head of the Legislative and Opinion Bureau, “Noufan Al-Ajarma”, has threatened the public sector employees from participating in the strike and said that the strike of public sector employees is prohibited and against the law.

In fact, what distinguishes this strike from others is that it has united groups of society that did not previously agree to reject the Tax Law, despite their different orientations. This strike has achieved an unprecedented success as it has encompassed the poor and middle-class people, including sectors that had to be exempted, like the agricultural sector and more importantly, this law is threatening the Jordanians with hunger.

The observers also considered that the role of the House of Representatives as a control authority regressed to become like a tool in the hands of the government. In fact, the latter is committed to the International Monetary Fund., which imposed on it harsh economic and social measures, in order to "improve the financial budget," to put the government under an econo-political pressure, which may push the king to abolish it, in order to absorb the wrath of trade unions, which is likely to turn into popular protests.

In fact, the Unions’ Council gave the government some time to withdraw the Income Tax Bill, before the implementation of the protests on next Wednesday.
