Mauritania: The Ministry of Health punishes the striking doctors by cutting their salaries

The Mauritanian Ministry of Health decided to cut the salaries of the striking doctors for more than two weeks as a punishment for their protest movement.

The ministry issued a written circular to the regional administrations in the country to identify all the doctors who participated in the strike and whose salaries will cut this month, considering that the strike "harmed the public interests and must be stopped immediately."

It is noteworthy that the authorities have not reacted positively to any of the striking doctors’ demands until now, since the open strike was preceded by several partial strikes.

The representatives of the doctors confirmed that the sector is continuing its protest until their demands are met, arguing that the authorities' warning of the cut of their salaries and its escalation against doctors will not discourage doctors from defending their rights and asking for them in a peaceful and civilized way.

They also considered that this threat and the attempt to intimidate doctors is a condemnable act. Moreover, doctors will not refrain from their strike to improve their living conditions, provide medical equipment and open an official campaign against the spread of fake drugs that are killing citizens and endangering the state and society.

work through the raising of their salaries, free medical care, and the insurance of the quality of medical equipment and combating drug fraud, which is spreading in the country. In addition, government agencies acknowledge its existence at a large-scale, however they did not even try to think how to address the phenomenon that has become a concern for health professionals and Mauritanian public health.

The National Health Union in Mauritania condemned the Ministry of Health's threat to the striking doctors to cut their poor salaries, rather than sitting with them for negotiations, stressing that these measures would only increase the doctors' determination and sacrifice, and that it will stand alongside with all the striking doctors in the public and private sectors.
