The Egyptian security forces arrested the lawyer and human rights activist, “Haitham Mohammadin”, at dawn on last Friday at his home in the city of “Al-Saf” from Giza governorate and took him to an unknown place.
In fact, “Mohammadin” has already been arrested several times for various reasons, he is a labour lawyer and human rights activist, the most recent arrest was on the grounds of the protests against the maritime boundary demarcation agreement, in which the “Tiran” and “Snafir” islands were transferred from Egypt to Saudi Arabia in 2016.
“Haitham Mohammadin” is a human rights activist who is known for his relentless defense of workers' issues. Haitham defended hundreds of workers who were persecuted for forming independent unions, demanding better conditions of work. In addition, he was persecuted by the Egyptian authorities several times for his human rights work, including his work at the” Nadim Center”.
Many members of the Egyptian society and international human rights organizations denounced this detention as it represented the continuation of the Egyptian authorities' use of arbitrary detention and forced kidnapping to punish human rights lawyers and members of the opposition.
Human rights organizations also considered it as another violation of the right of freedom, expression and association. It is likely that “Haitham” is currently subjected to ill-treatment in security custody. They called on the Egyptian authorities to release him immediately and unconditionally and to provide them with information on his whereabouts and conditions.
It is noteworthy that a number of activists have been arrested, charged for belonging to a banned group and threatening the public security. They are repeatedly remanded and they may soon be released or remain in pre-trial detention, in order to "avoid any protest as the authorities consider these young people as a threat and source of problems.”
