During Ramadan: the Houthis have deepened the suffering and the misery of the citizens

With the entrance of the month of Ramadan, the suffering of people in Sanaa has increased, due to the Houthi militias, in addition to the accumulation of their social and living problems at an alarming way.

Local media sources confirmed that there was a great discontent among the employees in Sanaa because of the Houthis’ non-adherence to a previous commitment to pay the half of their salaries, their prevention of all the voluntary activities and the establishment of any programs to provide the aid, without taking the permission of their national security service. Thus, the floor becomes theirs, for their organizations only, to seize the humanitarian and relief support provided by the international organizations.

The Houthi militias also decided to raise the "Zakat Al Nafs" (a charity given to the poor for redemption) by one third and to issue a law that would compel the citizens to pay the fifth of their own money and of the revenues from the natural resources of the country in favor of the leader and his descendants of by approving on the establishment of a zakat committee to look after the collection of these funds. In addition, they oblige traders to pay more than before, under the name of support, other than the double taxation fees and royalties obtained by different members of the militia under different names.

In light of the deteriorating living conditions of most of the citizens, the Houthis have approved on a new increase in fuel prices, equivalent to half a dollar, per 20 Liters.

As the number of casualties in the fighting increased and people refrained from responding to the calls for military recruitment, the Houthis tightened the security measures and deployed their people in the neighborhoods to monitor the actions of citizens. In the meantime, witnesses reported that the Houthis had stepped up the arrests and kidnappings of the suspected opposing activists, including activists on social networking sites.

While the militias prevented the reactivation of power plants in Sanaa and all the areas under its control, the electricity sector workers said that they imposed high fees on generators who sell electricity to shop owners and residents, which led to a 20 per cent of rise in the service price.
