Sudan: the imprisonment, fining, and flogging of a woman because she "committed adultery" with her husband

A married Sudanese woman received 75 lashes after being held for six months and fined 2,000 pounds for "adultery" with her husband.

The Sudanese citizen was engaged to her cousin for six years with the consent of her father, but after she became 28 years old and obtained a university degree, the father changed his position and decided to marry her another man.

Facing her father's pressure, the woman and her cousin went to the authorized and got married with the presence of "witnesses", which angered the father who filed a case against his daughter for adultery.

“Azza Mohamed Ahmed”, the lawyer for the wife, said the court had upheld the "adultery charges" in a two-year case, where she was sentenced in a very strange way, adding that her son was nine months old and that he had spent two-thirds of his life in prison with his mother.

The lawyer pointed out that the Islamic court in Sudan approved the validity of the marriage because the woman gave birth to a child, adding that the husband was also sentenced to one-year imprisonment and fined and lashed 75 lashes.

In fact, the Sudanese law punishes a woman who marries without her parent's consent to be imprisoned, in a country that has been widely criticized because of violence toward women.
