UAE: Gas leak suffocates 162 workers

UAE – 162 workers were suffocated by a toxic chlorine gas leak in Sharjah Industrial Area.

According to official sources, 74 labourers from different nationalities and different ages, were transferred to Al Qasimi and Kuwait Hospitals in Sharjah, and Khalifa Hospital in Ajman. The competent teams provided 74 labourers with the required treatment, while the rest were shifted to aforementioned hospitals.

The investigations indicated that the gas leak resulted from a cylinder containing the gas which was sold to scrap buyers. The cylinder was among several stored in an inappropriate place, the sources added.

The Sharjah Police continued the investigations into the incident and took the necessary measures in cooperation with Sharjah Municipality and Civil Defense, to prevent further leakage.
