Algeria: “Liberte” newspaper is no longer published

Algeria – Workers and employees of the French-language newspaper “Liberte” announced a strike on Friday to protest against the arbitrary dismissal of some of them, while the Liberty Workers Union announced that the newspaper would stop issuing their requests.

According to a statement issued by the union of workers of the newspaper of the General Union of Algerian Workers, the director of publishing has exceeded all red lines after the arbitrary dismissal of trade union workers who were deprived of all rights.

The statement added that the director of publishing used police officers inside the newspaper to expel the workers concerned with the decision of the dismissal without obtaining a court order, which the union considered another violation of the laws of the republic which exceeded all the red lines in the independent press.

Against the background of these decisions, all “Liberte” workers stopped working in solidarity with their trade union colleagues. They launched an open strike until the publishing director withdrew and cancelled his decision to expel union workers.
