Bahrain: the General Federation of Trade Unions and civil society organizations launched the Working Women Network

Bahrain – The General Union of Bahrain Trade Unions (BFTU) has launched with a number of civil society organizations in the presence of a representative of the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Working Woman Network.

I think that women should add to the network by activating their role in participation, because the network is trying to provide services to working women, such as the need of Bahraini women, said Suad Mubarak, assistant secretary for the working women and children at the federation. Working to create nurseries in the workplace, as this network will put this project and pressure to implement it from the heart of employers.

We participated in the Center for Excellence in Support of Women, the Bahraini Womens Union, the Transparency Society, the Bahrain young ladies association, and the National Committee for Retired Persons, Mubarak added.

 

For her part, Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab Trade Union Confederation Khatoun Al-Aradi explained the relationship of establishing the network in the Arab Trade union, stating that the Arab Trade Union Confederation, when it was formed in October 2014 at its founding conference, it approved the establishment of working committees and quality networks. Networks included are the working youth network, the workingwomens network, the Arab media network and the legal network.

 

The aim was to involve as many participants as possible from civil society organisations and the general trade unions, to be the head of the network for Arab women, the chairperson of the Arab Womens Committee, and to establish national networks for women in the Arab world. Where the head of every network shall be from the committee of women in the labour union in each Arab country.

 

14 members from the federations of the Arab Trade Union confederation have been invited to start the establishment of the networks based on the statutes of the Arab Trade Union Confederation and to activate them under the guidance of the text in the system. On this day, we launched the Womens Network of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Bahrain as the first union of members of the Arab Trade Union to introduce the first network to be announced.

 

The membership of the network consists of representatives of the General Secretariat of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions and Syndicates affiliated with it, civil society representatives, experts and specialists in womens affairs in general and working women in particular. The General Secretariat of the Union, through the Secretariat of Working Women and Children, is committed to providing all requirements for the success of this network; The Assistant Secretary for Working Women and Children coordinates the work of the Network and calls for its meetings. The Network meets twice a year, whenever necessary.

 

The objectives of the network are: To achieve the principle of equality and justice, to address all forms of violence and discrimination, to coordinate local womens action with respect to working women in particular and women in general, solidarity in all issues of women at the local and Arab levels, Implement laws and conventions related to womens rights, raise awareness of Arab working women and migrant workers.

 

The networks mission is to: build a base of trade union organizations and local NGOs, work with social movements that combat discrimination against women, advocate equality, expand membership in the network, build the capacity of member organizations of the network, and strengthen networking among network members and other Arab networks As well as deepening communication with civil society organizations.
