Palestine wins governing body seat

Palestine – The State of Palestine on Monday, represented by the Secretary-General of the Federation of Trade Unions of Palestine Shaher Saad, has been elected member of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The elections took place on the sidelines of the 106th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, With the participation of more than 4,000 delegates and representatives of governments, labour and trade union organizations, employers and a number of representatives of international organizations and civil society organizations in the world.  President of the Progressive Union of Moroccan Women and member of the General Secretariat of the Moroccan Labour Union Amal Al-Omari also won the membership of the Council for the Arab region. Saad received 89 votes from the conference members, while Amri received 95 votes. The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a United Nations agency dealing with labour problems, particularly international labour standards, social protection, and work opportunities for all. The ILO was founded in 1919 and became a specialized agency of the United Nations after the end of the Second World War in 1946. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has about 40 regional offices in different parts of the world.
