Jordan: AIDS cases among migrant workers

Jordan – The Ministry of Health has reported the registration of 456 cases of AIDS, hepatitis and tuberculosis among migrant workers from the beginning of this year until the end of June, while experts confirmed that the real numbers of patients are much higher.The director of the Directorate of Chest Diseases and the expatriates in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Mashayek, pointed out that the number of workers for the first half of this year amounted to about 172 thousand of different nationalities, the largest share of which was 102,000 Egyptian workers. Under the Public Health Law, the worker must obtain a medical certificate confirming that he is free of diseases from his country of origin, and that he undergoes the necessary tests once he enters the Kingdom. Thirty cases of AIDS have been recorded, 236 cases of hepatitis B have been detected, , As well as 181 cases of TB and 9 cases of non-pneumonia TB, Hepatitis B was distributed as follows 103 cases among Egyptian workers, 90 among Bangladeshi workers, 20 among Ghanaian workers, 15 among Filipino workers, and one in Syrian labour. AIDS cases were distributed as follows: 16 among Ghanaian workers, 4 among Egyptian workers, 4 among Bangladeshi workers and 5 among different Asian and Western nationalities. In terms of pulmonary tuberculosis cases, there were 93 cases among Bangladeshi workers, 43 among Filipino workers, 30 among Syrian workers and 15 among Asian and Western workers. The ALmasheikh pointed out that the ministry increased the Directorate capacity to conduct more tests. It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Health provides free treatment for citizens infected with AIDS, and in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior they expel expatriates infected with the disease to their country immediately.
