Jordan: Euro-Mediterranean welcomes the repeal of article 308 and stresses the need to legitimize victim support

Jordan – Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor praised the Jordanian Parliament decision to repeal Article 308 of the Penal Code, which allowed the rapist for years to marry the victim to avoid punishment. Removing the article completely is a positive step to strengthen the rule of law and end impunity for violence against women in Jordan, said Aroub Sobh, women’s adviser at the Monitor, pointing out that the deputies vote during the past two days brought several amendments in favor of Jordanian women, including the right to treat their children and criminalize sexual harassment. She praised the efforts of the community to cancel Article 308, such as the electronic petition signed by thousands of Jordanians demanding cancellation.
