Jordan – Women and human rights activists and representatives of civil society organizations, are holding a protest in front of the House of Representatives today to demand the complete abolition of Article 308 of the Penal Code, which pardons rapists on the condition that they marry the victim. The Council is expected to continue discussing the law in its form, which came from the parliamentary legal committee, and abolished Article 308, but kept on some of it provisions that pardon rapist of a minor from punishment if married her, which is rejected by most womens and human rights organizations. The organizations delivered a statement led by the National Committee for Womens Affairs, , to the Parliament yesterday, confirming that Article (308) contradicts the legal principles of civil law and personal status legislation, , the statement described what the parliamentary legal committee came with as a dangerous precedent and contradict the civil legislator which considers the legal acts of a minor to be void until he or she become an adult.
