Mauritania – The Arab Trade Union Confederation ATUC denounce the continued pressure on the Mauritanian trade union movement. Yesterday the Mauritanian judiciary issued a decision to suffocate the passport of Secretary-General of the General Federation of Workers of Mauritania, Abdullah Ould Mohamed Nha along with the passports of a number of his colleagues in the Confederation and banned them from travel. Prior to that, the security authorities arrested the Secretary-General of the Free Federation of Mauritanian Workers Samori Ould Bey, in addition of the closure of the headquarters of the General Federation of Mauritanian workers for several hours. . ATUC issued a statement today denouncing the decision and considering it a dangerous practice that conflicts with various international conventions that guarantee the freedom of trade union work and protection of trade union officials”. The travel ban came while the leaders of the leaders of the General Confederation of Mauritanian workers are preparing to participate in an important international meetings and conferences, which is an attempt to impose new restrictions against the Confederation. ATUC called on the Mauritanian authorities to respect the legal guarantees provided by the Mauritanian legislation and not to take action without clear legal basis for the restrictive measures taken against their basic rights and freedoms. ATUC called on all trade union organizations in the Arab countries and the world to intervene quickly and demand an immediate end to the crackdown targeting the General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers and respect for international conventions that guarantee the freedom of trade union work and the protection of trade union officials.
