Jordan – The Ministry of Labour will carry out next Sunday an inspection campaign on private schools to ensure that these schools adhere to the minimum wage, according to the ministrys media spokesman Mohammed al-Khatib. Khatib said the campaign also aims at making sure that teachers salaries are transferred to banks pursuant to the fifth clause of the unified contract signed by the General Union of Private Education Workers with the Private School Owners Association in March. Article 5 stipulates that all schools and kindergartens shall be obliged to transfer the salaries of their employees to the approved banks, unless teachers wishes otherwise, after deducting all the legal deductions”. Al-Khatib explained that the inspection campaign comes as a response to complaints by teachers in private schools that their schools are not committed to transferring wages to banks, which means that teachers cannot prove any violation in terms of wages.” He pointed out that the Ministry has spotted that some schools do not comply with the minimum wage, some terminate the teachers contracts during the summer holidays, to avoid paying their wages, and then sign new contracts with teachers by the start of the academic year, which is a violation of the unified contract.
