Algeria: The government is talking to itself, and social partners are on the scale

It is clear that the General Union of Algerian Workers does not represent the different denominations of the trade union and labour scene, after the deviation of the union leadership from focusing on the strategic issues, during the last two decades because of some workers and trade unions. They abandoned the interests of groups and large segments of workers who are supposed to stand by their side in their struggle in order to preserve inherited gains and that large numbers join independent trade unions in several sectors.

The Union’s center has had a disappointing position on the decision of shutting down institutions and lay off workers during the decade of the nineties, as well as its silence on the decline of the purchasing power of the citizens from that time until today. Moreover, it did not follow the concerns and demands of private sector workers, who lost the protection of “Abdul MajeedSidi Said” committee because of its silence, and its involvement in privatization projects of the public institution.  Perhaps the last trilateral meeting, which was blessed by the Central Trade Union, is one of the black stations in the trade union centre’s carrier.

The same is true for employers. The Presidents Forum, along with some business bodies, lost their place among the authorities. Thus, the government is shown as if it were meeting itself during the last tripartite meeting with its social partners, while representatives of small and medium enterprises were absent.
