Tunisia: The cancelation of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company’s strike

Following an agreement between the Tunisian General Union of Labour(UGTT) and the government, the strike scheduled for 17-18 January was cancelled by the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company.

According to the General Secretary of the General University for Electricity and Gas, “Abdulkader Al-Jalassi” said that it was agreed with the Prime Minister to obtain financial precedencies, under the financial support of the company, which would be divided into four instalments in 2018. He stated that obtaining financial support may have an indirect reflection on the non-acknowledgment of the increase in the electricity and gas tariffs programmed for this year.

In addition, it was agreed to save the debts of the institution, which is estimated at 400 million dinars ($ 180 million), about 38 percent of the total debt estimated to be 100 million dinars (40 million dollars) by 2017.
