Child labour in Libya: Victims of gangs, prostitution, drugs and terrorist organizations!!

Child labour in Libya is a remarkable phenomenon, in light of the regressionof the livingstandards in the country due to the successive crises over the past years. As a result, forcing families to send their children to the labour market in search of a living.

Sources in the anti-crime agency in Tripoli confirmed that this is not limited to normal work. Thousands of children have joined the militias and armed groups, stressing that armed groups throughout the country, includingmore than 10,000 children between the ages of 12 and 17, who carry weaponsfor money. Moreover, these children are targets of drug traffickers, prostitution and terrorist organizations. They have beenexploited because of their living conditions, the breakdown of their family ties and the lack of attention of the official authorities.

It is noteworthy that the Libyan law prohibits child labour since 1970, but the magnitude of the crisis experienced by the country made the implementation of this law elusive, especially since the official authorities did not provide an alternative. Regarding the growing threats that would face children, including child labour, the Ministry of Education in 2014 set up a committee to study laws and adopt a new child protection law, in cooperation with theUnited Nations Childrens Emergency Fund(UNICEF).
