MAURITANIA— Mauritanian Parliament has passed a new anti-slavery law that criminalizes 10 forms of slavery.
The new law that comprises 26 articles criminalizes forced marriages, and imposes fines on any person referring to someone as a slave in public, among other practices that are considered forms of slavery.
The law also stipulates the establishment of new courts to look into slavery cases, in addition the law stipulates that a judge should protect rights of victims of slavery and impose fines on perpetrators.
Mauritania abolished slavery in 1981; still human rights organizations say slavery is still a practiced there.
