UNRWA employees in Jordan strike and protest funding cuts

JORDAN—7000 of UNRWA staff in Jordan on Monday announced work stoppage for one hour, in protest against the agencys decision to reduce services provided to Palestinian refugees. This move, was also joined by the Agencys staff in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Syria and Lebanon.

 UNRWA staff is estimated at 30,000 in the five regions where the agency operates. This move, they said is part of a measures they are adopting which may end up with an open strike.

The Agency staff started their protest in conjunction with the meeting of UNRWAs Advisory Committee, which begins tomorrow in Amman, withthe presence of representatives of 24 donor countries and a host of refugees.

Well-informed sources at UNRWA considered this action as a first step as part of escalatory measures, that will be adopted by around 30,000 employees at the agency, if the administration did not revisit its recent decision to reduce services provided to refugees.
