Train drivers threaten to protest over the civil service law

EGYPT—Train drivers in Egypt have threatened to embark on a strike over the new civil service law that due to its implementation there was a deduction from their wages.
In case they will not be compensated for this deduction, they will embark on partial strike, the drivers said.
The General Trade Union of Railway Workers’ secretary general addressed the rail way committee and minister of transport to amend the payroll system and avoid the impact of implementing the law on the railway workers.
The civil service law, which was passed in March shortly aims to reform Egypt’s administrative apparatus in order to encourage investments by curbing bureaucratic inefficiencies.
According to the new law, basic salaries would constitute 80 percent of overall wages in all government institutions as opposed to the older unit-by-unit system of determination, while bonuses would be calculated based on performance.
