United Arab Emirates- Violation of workers’ rights in Saadiyat island projects

UAE- In a report published today, Human Rights Watch noted serious concerns on the rights of workers at a huge project in Abu Dhabi that will host branches of Louvre, Guggenheim museums and New York University campus. HRW underscored responsibility on these institutions in linking their participation in Saadiyat project to commitment of the real estate developers to protect workers from any violations, including arbitrary deportation that took place against some of them.
The report pointed to the abuse of migrant workers in Saadiyat Island site, including holding back their salaries, entitlements, and recruitment fees, in addition to confiscating their passports, as well as housing them in sub-standard accommodations.
In most serious cases, contractors are working for governmental real estate development in New York University Campus and Louvre worksites, informed UAE authorities about the strike, which led to arbitrary deportation to several hundred striking workers.
