PALESTINE- In a series of meetings were held in Ramallah, PGFTU confirmed the right of Palestinian workers to access social security. Meetings were held with the social partners through specialized committees to produce first draft of the Social Security Act in Palestine. The meetings in Ramallah were followed by a series of meetings with ILO in Lebanon in order to finalize first draft of the same. The delegation also visited the Social Security Corporation (SSC) in Jordan in order to be informed about SSC work progress, being one of the best practices in this field at the regional level, in addition to its similarity to the Palestinian context.
It should be mentioned that most important points of disagreement was about deduction rates, as the current draft refers to a ratio of 7.5% for workers and 8.5% for employers in aging and retirement, which is described by PGFTU as inequitable.
Through extensive media campaign targeting all categories of workers, PGFTU seeks to raise awareness of the Palestinian workers on importance of social security as an integral part of social protection ground.
