PARIS –The International Federation of Journalists and affiliates from Mediterranean called for a new regional campaign to promote a strong professional journalists culture across the region to reinforce independence of journalists and their basic rights, improves safety and promotes highest professional standards.
Sixty unionists, media expertiseand broadcasters from across Mediterranean region came together to commemorate murders of Charlie Hebdo journalists and killing of tens of journalists that take place every year across the region without arresting their killers.
The meeting also addressed long term challenges facing media, and the impact of violence against press, in addition to pressure on minority communities on both shores ofMediterranean.
Participants further discussed dangers of hate speech, misuse of freedom expression by far right racist groups to alienate marginalized groups, meeting also warned against governments seeking to use violence threat to restrict and control journalism to protect ‘national interest’.
