Algeria: protests in front of the Ministry of Labor to abolish the new labor law

ALGERIA- In protest against articles of the new labor law leading to further restrictions on the rights of workers, independent trade unions in Algeria planned to engage in protest movements to amend the new labor law.
Independent trade unions decided to participate in seminar organized by the Independent General Confederation of Workers in Algeria (CIGATA) in a bid to internationalize the issue of new labor law by addressing ILO’s Committee on Freedom of Association.
In an escalation movement against this law, independent trade unions seek to mobilize labor classes to protest in front of Ministry of Labor to prompt in reconsidering the law in order to protect rights of workers.
The new labor law gives further authorities to employers by changing terms of employment contracts without informing workers, it also legalizes child and minor labor and monitor their revenues. The law redefines national minimum wage and prevents strike before resorting to a reconciliation committee.
On trade unions, the law included new conditions that oblige trade unions to obtain a memo signed by the management for work stoppage and strikes. Trade unions confirmed their rejection of such conditions considering them as insurmountable and unattainable as managements usually reject to sign on strike notices.
