An Egyptian company dismisses labor leaders

EGYPT –Al Mehalla Weaving Company has decided to dismiss labor leader Kamal Fayyoumi claiming that he is encouraging the company’s workers to stage a sit-in strike and disrupt production line.
The company also dismissed two other employees, Naji Haidar and Jamal Jad on January 26.

Company’s sources confirmed that other decisions are expected to be issued in the upcoming few days. Planned decisions include dismissing other three workers and transferring tens of unionists to other places. This move came after government’s decision to extend the current term for trade unions and not to conduct elections that were supposed to be held in May 2015.

Last January, the company’s management referred eight unionists of its employees to administrative investigation; three of them were laid off after being accused of inciting other employees to stage a sit-in and disrupt the production line.
Those who were investigated stressed that these accusation are baseless and they were protesting for other reasons that include demanding the distribution of annual dividends for financial year 2013/ 2014.
Other demands include announcing a timetable for development plans and holding corrupt people accountable, in addition to discharging FarajAwad, the company’s commissioner- general.
