JORDAN— The Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) expressed dismay over the Parliaments decision to cancel grating women a 15 per cent quota in governorates councils under the new decentralization law.
The decision to grant women this quota was proposed by deputy Wafa Bani Mustapha and endorsed by a majority of MPs.
However, on Sunday they went back on this decision.
In a statement issued this week, the JNCW said it work closely with the Senate to reverse this and amend the law adopting the quota again.
After being endorsed by the Lower House of Parliament, laws are referred to the Senate for deliberation.
In Jordan, 25 per cent of the seats are allocated for women, while the quota is 15 in the Lower House.
