ALGERIA— The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and Algerian National Union of Journalists condemned the imprisonment of an Algerian journalist and arbitrary withdrawal of another’s Press ID, considering such procedures as escalatory in practice of violations against press freedom in Algeria.
The imprisonment of the journalist came against backdrop of an article published last year, which included certain sentences that were deemed by Algerian judiciary as offensive to Prophet Mohammed.
In a related development, Algerian Ministry of Communications declined to renew the press ID of London-based Middle East newspaper correspondent, who confirmed that reason for such an act was criticism by TV program against senior officials.”
