More than 50 % of Imams are not appointed through the ministry

TUNIS— The General Unions for Imams that is affiliated to the Tunisian General Labor Union said 50 % of Imams (preachers) in some entities are not designated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

In a press meeting, Abdul Salam Itewi head of the Union said there are no criteria for the selection and employment of Imams, and there are no laws governing the issue.

He noted that Imams were not called to take part in a recent national campaign launched by the ministry, while the latter is rejecting to start talks with the Imams.

Itewi also added that “Imams” might escalate and even leave mosques to be run by the ministry.
