PALESTINE— One-third of the Palestinian population in the West Bank and Gaza Strip are youth, in the (15-29) years age category, showed results of a recent census.
The census conducted in the third quarter of 2015 and results announced today also showed that 70 per cent of the total population is less than 30 years old.
The census was conducted by the Palestinian Department of Statistics in cooperation with the Higher Council for Youth and Sports and funded by the government, BTC, UNICEF and UNFPA.
The finding showed that number of those in the (15-29) years age category stands at 1.4 million. 716,000 of this category are men and 688,000 are women, according to the results.
Results also showed that 37 per cent of this category are enrolled in schools, with 36 per cent in the West Bank and 38 per cent in the Gaza Strip.
Of those holders of diploma certificates, 39 per cent are unemployed (27 per cent in the West Bank and 57 per cent in the Gaza Strip). Almost 83 per cent are employed in the private sector and 10 per cent in public institutions.
Results of the survey also showed that 24 per cent of the Palestinian youth hope to immigrate outside the country with the majority of them for economic reasons.
