PGFTU rejects the labor ministry’s procedures

PALESTINE— The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions’ (PGFTU) executive committee has rejected procedures adopted by the ministry of labor, requesting the monetary authority to freeze the bank accounts of the trade unions.

This came during the committee’s first meeting presided over by Shaher Saad, the PGFTU’s secretary general, after being elected as members during the Federation’s fifth conference.

In a statement it issued, the committee said the labor ministry’s procedures are “illegal and it affects trade unions’ freedoms” that are guaranteed in the national and international legislations including the ILO agreements number (87) and (98) and the Palestinian labor law number (7) for the year 2000.

The committee also said the ministry will be responsible for any financial damages that will affect the unions and their federation due to implementing this procedure, in addition to any impact on the labor movement.

In its statement, the committee stressed that defending unions’ freedoms will be the Federation’s main concern and main activity during the international labor day observed on May 1st.
