MAURITANIA— Press news confirmed an imminent end to the forty- day strike held by the National Mining and Industrial Company, SNIM workers, following a meeting between SNIM director and the General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CGTM) and union leaders in which they agreed to start a dialogue.
Trade union sources said that meeting resulted in an agreement on the need to launch a comprehensive dialogue that would end the strike, provided that dialogue should be held in Zouerate city, residence for majority striking workers.
The sources added that both sides also agreed that dialogue would be attended by workers’ elected representatives in Zouerate. They also agreed to coordinate timing and details in few days.
SNIM strike in Zouerate called for and supported by CGTM, marked its fifth week, while workers insist on the move until their demands of open direct negotiations with their elected representatives are fulfilled in addition to implementation of agreement signed on March 5, 2014 granting workers a considerable increase in salaries as of October 1, 2014 which was not fulfilled by SNIM management
