Tunisia – A group of union leaders announced today a national campaign to promote the presence of women in the executive office of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), in the coming National Congress to be held from January 22 to 25, 2017 in Tunis.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the headquarters of the UGTT, Emna Awadi, the campaign coordinator, said that the event will be implemented within the framework of strengthening the presence of women in decision-making positions, particularly in the trade unions, and they will organize certain actions in all sectors and in regional federations.
She also said that despite the presence of women in all decision-making positions in the union, and in the National Council, or as members of the Administrative Authority, they are absent from the Executive Office, noting that there are at least 60 women who have all the conditions to run for such positions, stressing that women unionist have the ability, competence and merit which qualify them to participate in decision-making positions.
