Egypt: Arab Foundation records 199 protests in the first quarter of this year

Egypt – Arab foundation for civil society and human rights support issued a report showing the numbers and reasons behind all protests took place in Egypt during the three months of April and May, and June 2016.

Executive Director of the Foundation Sharif Helaly said that the three months have seen 199 protest between vigils and sit – ins and strikes and marches, April saw the highest protests reached 86 in protest, followed by the month of June at a rate of 75 protests, while May had the least number of protests reached 38.

Total numbers of labour protests in the three months reached 57, 16 protests in April 14 protests in May, and 27 protests in June, and came 28.6% of the total protests in this period. While the protests held by people reached 23 protests in three months, which is 11.5% of total protests June was the highest with 9 protests, then 8 protests in April, and 6 protests in May.

The demands that have been announced in these protests, ranger some were asking for  higher salaries, allowances and better work environment  and reached to  43 protest the highest was in June 21 protests, then 12 in  May, then  10 protests in April.

Cairo, witnessed  37.6% of these protests 31 protest in April, and 22 protests in May and June, followed by Giza governorate which witnessed 7:53 % of the protests  the highest in  April seen  11protests, June 3  protests , one protest in May.

According to the report, most places that have seen protests were in front of the Cabinet with total of 17 protests, followed by the province buildings with total of 11 protests was the highest was in  June 7 protests, then 2 protests in April and 2 in May, and in the third place was the  journalists union seen  10 protests the highest was in  May 6 protests, 4 protests in April.
