Iraq – National Union condemns attack on Iraqi reporter

Iraq – National Union of Iraqi Journalists confirmed that the absence of real law that guarantee the rights of journalists and protect them encourages some officials to assault them. 

The union considered the attack on the Iraqi TV reporter by MP Mishan al-Jubouri and his attack on press and media family. Journalistic Freedoms Observatory attributed the incident to habitual act by Jubouri who evade accountability in a lot of cases.

A shocking video released  Friday  (23 September 2016) showed the MP of Salahuddin province Mishan al-Jubouri and his son assault the correspondent of the Iraqi satellite channel Omar al-Azzawi with insults and beatings, during the coverage of liberalization of  Sharqat, (120 km north Tikrit city), from (Daesh).

The head of the National Union of Iraqi journalists Adnan Hussein said in a press statement, said that some of the workers in state institutions consider themselves above the laws and MP Mishan al-Jubouri is one of those.

Hussein to called on to amend the journalist rights law after it proved to be mere ink on paper, stressing that the armed forces should provide protection for reporters and journalists who risk their lives to report the incidents on ground.
