Algeria: Sonelgaz threaten to organize a national strike

Algeria_ the National Independent Workers Union of Electricity and Gas (Sonelgaz) threatened to organize a national strike, where the date will be determined during a scheduled national conference next November, to condemn the policy of enslavement and disregarding of the local laws and international conventions that guarantee the fundamental rights of workers as well as the policy that is pursued by the companys management to impose working over the weekend that denies workers their rights to rest. The union stressed in a statement  where it bears the signature of its president Malal Rauf, that what is happening in Sonelgaz group recently from workers enslavement and disregarding of local laws and international conventions ,is ratified by depriving workers of their weekly rest and imposing them on working overtime without any pay. In some cases, workers might be provided with a compensatory day in return. However, this is not generalized or given to everyone that is contrary to all laws. The social partner accused the ministry of labour and the social security of participating in the forced enslavement of workers through the general labour inspectorate, so as not to impose legal controls for the implementation of the law and international agreements which are also discarded, which in turn made the institution above the law, explaining that they had already directed several letters to the company’s management asking to provide compensation payments for workers and demanding to stop these practices because it is a clear violation of the laws.

The independent union questioned the role the Ministry of labour is taking by their labour inspectorates and where do they stand? Calling Sonelgaz group to stop immediately all who are forced to work against the workers right and to respect the labour law. Before they confirm the national strike option, given the work circumstances, the strike is highly suggested and this will determine the history of the National Council and the delegates of all states of the union during a meeting preparatory to conduct an exceptional national conference on the measurable work conditions on November 19, 2016. As well as, reinforcing the list of demands that have not been implemented.
