The Commission rejected the proposal, but agreed to fund surveillance equipment such as cameras and motion detectors to strengthen border protection.
It is worth noting that EU states have agreed to allocate €6 billion from their budgets to protect their external borders for the period 2021-2027. The Commission had requested a budget of €11.4 billion for this purpose.
