The official spokesman for the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES), Ramadan Ben Amor, stated that this annual gathering of social movements comes within the framework of the commemoration of International Human Rights Day on December 10th. He explained that the protesters want to “tell the ruling political authority that its economic and social policies, especially the way the government deals with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), does not reflect the expectations of fragile and vulnerable social groups and does not respond to their needs.”
FTDES’s spokesperson added that economic and social rights “had a temporary increase after 2011, but now witnesses a major decline with high rates of unemployment, irregular migration, and the deterioration of public services.”
