Italy: Dozens of stranded migrants protest in a rescue ship

The Italian authorities in Catania allowed the disembarkation of 357 people, including children, while refusing to receive 215 others.

Human Rights Watch said on November 08 that the refusal to accommodate all passengers of these ships “endangers them and violates Italy’s human rights obligations,” noting that international and European law guarantees the right to seek asylum and prevents collective expulsions.

In this context, dozens of citizens demonstrated, calling on the hard-line Italian government to evacuate the trapped migrants from the ship. While Italy is waiting for a European agreement to distribute the migrants among the European Union states, before allowing the ships of humanitarian organizations to dock in Italian ports and disembark the migrants on its territory.
