The experts said in a statement issued on 1 November that “it is worrying that there is still no accountability after months of the deaths of dozens of African migrants, including refugees and asylum seekers, in violent clashes with security forces in Melilla, Spain.”
The statement stressed that “a thorough investigation, compensation for victims and their families, and guarantees that the tragedy will not occur again are required under international human rights law.”
It is worth noting that the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism and a working group of experts on the population of African descent estimated the number of victims at least 37 in the incidents in Melilla.
