The report indicated that at the beginning of this year, with the start of the recovery from COVID-19, employment rates returned to pre-pandemic levels or even exceeded them in most developed economies. The report noted that the increase was particularly evident in high-skilled jobs and among women. The report explains that the crisis was due to the increase in informal jobs that usually lack social protection.
In this context, ILO warned that the situation has worsened in recent months, as working hours recorded a decrease of 1.5% in the last quarter of this year from what they were before the epidemic, which represents a deficit of 40 million full-time jobs.
The report pointed out that the war in Ukraine and the multiple and overlapping crises led to a decline in salaries, an increase in debts, and inequality.
In the face of this rapidly deteriorating situation, ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo stated that “we need more coordinated efforts at the national and international levels to address the deeply worrisome global labour market situation and prevent a major general decline in it.”
