Member of the Jordanian Phosphate Company Pensioners’ Committee Brahim Ghababsheh said that about 800 pensioners could join the protest movement while dozens of others could not because of their health condition. In a statement given to the Jordanian Labour Observatory, Ghababsheh explained that “the protests will continue until the protestors demands are met.”
In previous protests, the pensioners were subject to police harassment while the company’s administration continued to reject negotiations.
The protesters are demanding that the health insurance system be restored to its 2000 status, that the cases of their fellow retirees excluded from health insurance due to late payment be addressed, and that annual contributions not be increased under any circumstances. They also call for no repercussions from any insurance deficit and for three of them to be appointed to represent all pensioners on the Health Insurance Committee as the current committee members have been appointed by the Company’s administration.
In previous protests, the pensioners explained that, faced with the administration’s indifference, they had no choice but to protest. They also sent correspondence to the Kuwaiti and Indian embassies in Jordan as the governments of these two countries hold shares in the company.
