World Teachers’ Day: Teachers in the Arab region face many challenges

Audrey Azoulay called on governments to support teachers. She also added that the profession is no longer attracting younth.

Teachers in several Arab countries are living in difficult conditions, due to the political and economic conditions in their countries.

Lebanon:

The school year began with a series of protests over the devaluation of teachers’ salaries due to the decline of the pound against the dollar and the country’s economic crisis. Primary school teachers ended their strike and resumed classes. However, secondary school teachers decided to continue their strike until their demands are met.

Sudan:

In light of the unprecedented inflation the country is witnessing, no increase in teachers’ salaries has been introduced. The Sudan Teachers’ Committee called for a general strike at the beginning of the school year, calling for an improvement in teachers’ conditions. The strike is part of a series of protests organised by the union over the past few months, as the whole country is witnessing protests denouncing the deterioration of the economic situation.
