WHO and ILO call for new measures to tackle mental health issues at work

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) have issued a series of recommendations to avoid mental health risks at work.

The two organisations explained that 12 billion working days are lost each year due to depression or anxiety, while one in six people of working age suffer from a mental disorder.

ILO said that work can amplify wider societal problems that negatively impact mental health, including discrimination and inequality.

Therefore, WHO and ILO recommend, for example, training managers to strengthen their capacity to prevent stressful work environments and respond to distressed workers. In a joint guidance note, the two organizations proposed concrete strategies for governments, employers, and workers to protect people with mental disorders and help them to progress in their work environment.

The ILO stressed the importance of building a preventive policy on mental health at work and of designing a working world that prevents social stigma and exclusion, which would create a sense of support and protection for employees with mental health problems.
