New ILO and IOM report: 50 million people worldwide in modern slavery

Estimates also showed that most forced labour occurs in the private sector, including industry, construction, agriculture, and domestic work.

Reacting to the report, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder stressed that “Nothing can justify the persistence of this fundamental abuse of human rights,” adding that “we know what needs to be done, and we know it can be done… Trade unions, employers’ organizations, civil society and ordinary people all have critical roles to play.”

ILO and IOM have suggested a number of actions to eradicate modern slavery. These include improving and enforcing labour laws and inspections, ending state-imposed forced labour and raising the legal age of marriage to 18 without exception.
