Tunisia: The General Federation of Higher Education warns against the immigration of university professors

In an open letter published on Monday 19 September, the federation expressed its concern about the state of Tunisian higher education institutions and called on the authorities to urgently reform the sector.

The federation also said that around 2,000 university professors, of various grades, have left the country since 2014. A percentage 18.5% of these teachers are researchers who have either immigrated through the Tunisian Agency for Technical Cooperation or resigned from the university and left the country permanently.

The organisation added that the decrease in budgets allocated to education, the deterioration of the social status and working conditions of academics as well as the degradation of their purchasing power have had a negative impact on the profession, which has led to the immigration of academic skills in search of better prospects.
