3rd ATUC Conference: Final Motion on Economic, Social, and Political Priorities of Arab Trade Unions Published

Arab trade unions identified the causes of the economic crises facing most Arab countries and pointed out, among other things, the lack of participatory reforms, the major shortcomings of the internal and external investment environment, the deterioration of the control systems and of good economic governance.

On the social level, the motion states, for example, that the accumulated crises are the natural result of recurrent economic crises. In this context, it explains that the worsening of unemployment and poverty rates, the weakness of social protection systems, and the arbitrary management of education and vocational training systems are the main causes of the increase in all forms of migration.

On the political side, the motion focused on the Palestinian Affair, recalling that ATUC has always advocated for the right of the Palestinian people to their independence and their own state, with Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with legitimate international decisions. In this context, it called on all trade unions and international bodies concerned to mobilise to fight against the repression and contempt of the occupation government.

The motion also reiterated the trade unions’ call to continue promoting dialogue to end the crisis of the Yemeni people, who are victims of various forms of displacement and famine due to the war. It also stressed the need to put an end to the splits in Libya by establishing an internal dialogue without any foreign intervention in order to build a lasting political, economic, and social stability.

The motion also stressed the mobilisation of Arab trade unions to enact a new Arab social contract based on providing the basic rights of workers and vulnerable groups, encouraging environmentally friendly investments and equitable sharing of the fruits of development.
