Egypt: Workers of Beshay steel plant protest

Workers at this factory have been calling for a salary increase since 2017. The salaries vary between £1,200 ($63) and £4,000 ($207) and, therefore, do not allow workers to support themselves. This situation has led three employees to commit suicide.

Faced with the administration’s indifference, the workers have decided to suspend negotiations and continue the strike until their demands are fully met. They are demanding an increase in salaries and the withdrawal of the complaint filed by the administration against their colleagues.

In a statement issued last week, the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights expressed its support for the Beshay steel workers and called on the administration to grant them their rights, apply health and safety measures, and provide them with appropriate working conditions.
