Italy: Migrants evacuated from Lampedusa camp following reports of deteriorating living conditions

Strong criticism was levelled against the poor living conditions in the Lampedusa camp. There were shocking reports about the lack of basic hygiene and care, and the spread of dirt and garbage, in which migrants live, including pregnant women and children.

These conditions are described by Flavio Di Giacomo of the United Nations Organization for Migration (IOM), in a tweet as a “scandal”, referring to the weakness of the migrant distribution system.

It is worth noting that the Italian Ministry of the Interior recorded the arrival of more than 30,000 people to the coast of Italy on boat this year.
